The 5 Fall Fashion Trends You Should Have in Your Closet for Fall

Well, I meant to have this post ready last week but between busy days of meetings followed by Dylan getting sick and then Dylan getting ME sick, things got pushed back. But, it’s all maybe for the best since today is the first day of fall and this entire post is all about my favorite fall fashion trends for 2019!

I hope you’ll enjoy a little shopping to celebrate the new season! I picked lots of great pieces at a wide range of price points. And don’t forget to leave me a comment and tell me which trend is your favorite!

Mustard Yellow

At The Blog Societies Conference back in August, Marc Fisher kindly gifted us their Chang loafers for fall. I got them in a mustard yellow, which was a little out of the box for me but I thought it was a great color for fall and that they’d be great with jeans and cute floral tops – and great for game day! After that, I started to see more of the color and I actually found that I really like it more than I expected.

Five Favorite Finds //

  • Banana Republic Blouse // They call this color “autumn sun yellow” and I think it’s pretty perfect! This blouse would look perfect with jeans and heels for a go-to casual weekday look.
  • J.Crew Sweatshirt // A great way to work this color into athleisure looks! I actually like it paired with green joggers or leggings
  • Anthropologie Wide Leg Pants // I’m obsessed with these pants! They look like they’d be so comfortable and I would pair them with a white blouse as shown OR go monochromatic with this striped top.
  • Rhode Zebra Print Dress // These Rhode dresses have been really popular over the summer! They’re a splurge but this one was one of the more unique ways to wear this color, so I wanted to include it.
  • BURU Sneakers // I love that she calls this color “Marigold” and these sneakers are so fun!

Statement Skirts

I declared it the “summer of the dress” and today I’m calling fall “skirt season.” I know, I know, it’s two pieces instead of one, potentially more work than it needs to be, but I’m a fan. I like the idea of print mixing with skirts and creating dressed up and dressed down looks starting with the same piece.

Five Favorite Finds //

  • Anthropologie Skirt // I saw this in their catalog several weeks ago and have been “about to buy” ever since. I really love the entire look with the sweatshirt and cool boots, so I’m debating just replicating the whole thing!
  • Colorblock Mini Skirt // I’ve become much more of a maxi skirt person over the years, but this neutral color block mini caught my eye. I think it would be so cute with black tights, boots and a turtleneck.
  • Leopard Maxi Skirt // If you keep reading, we’ll talk more leopard in a minute but this skirt is AMAZING! Leopard is practically a neutral these days and I think you (and I) would wear this ton in the fall and winter.
  • Milly Sequin Skirt // If you want to make a sparkly statement this fall (or even as we get into the holiday season), you’ve got to take a look at this one! It could be so fun with a black tee and a headband or dress it up more with a lacy top.
  • BURU Ruffle Midi Skirt // I have this one in two colors (pink and navy) and I almost bought it in a third. It’s a really great elastic waist skirt and the statement is in the pleat and ruffle combination. It’s more of a statement staple piece, but you’ll also get a ton of wear out of this one!

Dark Fall Florals

I stumbled into this trend when Mirth previewed their fall styles and I saw this gorgeous dress (which also comes in a blouse!). It’s the perfect flowy dress that’s easy to wear right now as it’s not exactly getting cooler out, but would also look cool with a leather jacket and boots. And as someone who doesn’t wear a ton of prints and patterns, these dark florals are a little easier for me to shop and wear!

Five Favorite Finds //

  • MICHAEL Michael Kors Dress // Kate wore it, so I bought it. This style is almost identical to the one Duchess Kate wore to drop their kids off to their first day of school and I think it’s a great work dress or cute for a dinner event or date!
  • Something Navy Blouse // This is the perfect work to weekend top! You could wear this with a pencil skirt or pants just as easily as you could do with jeans. I love the balloon sleeve for a little something extra.
  • BURU Liberty Tank // I bought and love this tank! It’s great for layering over a puff sleeve top, or under a long cardigan.
  • Anthropologie Floral Sweater + Pants // This is one of those outfits I think I would love but my husband might give me a funky look if I was wearing it (which means I’ll probably buy it!).

Perfect Plaids

Plaid is a fall classic! I think it is almost so much so that you could quote that “florals for spring” thing from the Devil Wears Prada and make it “plaid for fall.” I just think that a good plaid adds warmth and richness to your outfit and there are so many good pieces out there right now!

Five Favorite Finds //

  • Athleta Pants // I love the idea of taking this more formal-looking trend into an athleisure look with these pants. It’s the perfect “school pick up” or casual weekend look with a super simple black tee.
  • BURU Coat // I have so many outfit ideas in my mind to wear with this coat! Jeans and a button-down, over a leopard dress and over a full navy blue outfit with white boots. It also comes in a dress version too, if you want a full matched look!
  • Something Navy Blouse // I really think you can never go wrong with a good, simple black plaid shirt. It goes with just about everything – but I loved the idea of pairing with some faux leather pants (or these leggings, a la Kathryn Dennis, since I’m just joining the “I watch too much Southern Charm club” – also Spanx leggings are worth it).
  • Vince Camuto Skirt // I bought this one after I did this blog post last week (in fact, I bought the whole outfit), but if the yellow isn’t your thing, it comes in a blue color. Size down, it runs big!
  • Gal Meets Glam Dress // This dress was so well-loved last fall that they brought it back this year! I missed it the last time but love the rich green and it would actually make a great dress for family Christmas card photos!

Wild Finds

Does animal print really ever go out of style? I didn’t think so. Zebra, leopard and snake print are all classics that you can easily mix and match with things you already own to make a style statement in any season. You can really warm them up for winter with sweaters and layers!

Five Favorite Finds //

  • J.Crew Leopard Sweater // I’ve been eyeing this one for a while and definitely need it for fall! I love it layered over a blue button-down or just on its own with jeans.
  • Banana Republic Dress // This is THE PERFECT Leopard print dress. PERFECT, I tell you! I got it already and plan on showing you a few ways to wear it for fall and winter!
  • Michael Kors Tiger-Print Dress // This tiger print dress is super cute with sneakers or heels and I love the flounce hem on it.
  • Marc Fisher Boots // When I saw these Marc Fisher boots at the Blog Societies Conference in August, I knew I had to have them. I like to think of them as my “fall school pickup boots.” If you like booties better, try these
  • BURU Lion Earrings // These doorknocker earrings have a bit of a vintage vibe to them and they’ll make a big statement wherever you wear them. You can also try the lion head belt if you like that better.
