I’m not sure if anyone else would remember this but there used to be a “the most wonderful time of the year” commercial with a mom bounding through the aisles of a store, shopping for school supplies, with pouting kids behind her. I’ve pretty much always felt like “that mom,” even before I was one!
Back to school shopping has always been one of my favorite things to do. I love the fresh start, new pencils, a new backpack and, of course, new clothes. And with Jackson starting “big boy school” and kindergarten this fall, I’ve been looking forward to getting him all ready all summer long.
When it comes to back-to-school clothes shopping, I try to be a little bit strategic about my purchases and make the most of the money I spend. Because the kids grow so fast (and are so hard on their clothes!), I start by going through closets and taking out everything that no longer fits or has holes, stains or just is no longer wearable.
Then I head out to shop (or more typically, online) and sort of plan my shopping strategy and budget to shop in a few different categories to restock and prep for a new season of activities:
Ready to Play
We call these “comfies” at our house, but they’re essentially workout clothes and comfortable items that can be worn around the house on weekends or for gym time and sports.
We always have good luck finding these pieces with Carter’s and Kohl’s has an awesome selection of them right now. Jackson was pretty excited about his “Born to Be Great” tee and it definitely inspired some superhero poses. I’ve also found that these pieces are super durable and wash up so nicely!
Jackson doesn’t have a very formal dress code or uniform for school, but I always like for him to look put together and nice. I think it’s a good habit to start early and he knows that he has to be dressed, with his hair combed and teeth brushed to take on his day.
I love that Carter’s makes it SO easy by offering sets that are easy to mix and match. This little polo set with burgundy pants is super cute and I’ll be able to pair that polo with khakis or green shorts, and the pants will go with a sweater as we get into cooler temps.
This little construction themed set is also a really cute and casual way for the kids to be put together and comfortable at school. I couldn’t resist picking up a set for each of the boys (see the baby set here)! Another reason I love sets like this is that they make mornings easier for Jackson. We can agree that he’ll wear “that cute construction outfit” and it gives him the chance to grab his clothes and dress himself! I’m honestly still a little bit amazed that he’s big enough to do this – time flies!
I try to seasonally update the boys’ pajama drawers. They love themed PJs, so I always try to find something fun and cute. Again, it’s so easy with Carter’s because they have tons of little sets that we can mix and match. These are also nice because it allows for Jackson to get into his PJ drawer and choose his own – and I know that they’ll match (most of the time!).
Are you all looking forward to back to school time? What are you shopping for?
Now is a great time to get started and Kohl’s is a great place to do it! Through August 20, you can get 40-50% off of all Carter’s playwear and get $10 off of $50 with the code BTS10– so it’s time to stock up on all of your back to school essentials.
