Healthy Holiday Tips


Happy Monday, friends! I hope you all had a great weekend and are ready for this holiday week. Our Christmas preparations are wrapping up this weekend. I’m hoping that all I have to do next week is to plan our Tex Mex Christmas Eve dinner and finish wrapping presents.

Christmas got here so quickly and the New Year is sneaking up right behind it. So today, I’m excited to be partnering with The Barre Code Metro Detroit and lululemon to share some of our tips for staying healthy during these crazy holiday weeks and prepping for a healthy and successful 2017!


Routine not Resolution: Don’t look at these last couple of weeks of the year as your time to indulge and go crazy before you start your New Year’s resolution. Treat these weeks as you normally would by keeping as consistent as possible with good habits, and maybe even adding a new one. That way, you’ll cruise into 2017 having already started a good routine that will be easy to continue and help you reach your goals.

Plan, Plan, Plan!: We all know the saying – if we fail to plan we should plan to fail. Stay on track to your fitness goals by scheduling them early, penciling them on the calendar, and treating just as you would with any other meeting or engagement. If you need a little motivation to get you there when the to-do list gets long, focus on the way you’ll feel after a great workout – nothing compares to the energizing power of those extra holiday endorphins! 

Focus on the “Nice List”: Santa makes his list and checks it twice, so this season while making your holiday eating and grocery list – focus on adding in the “good” rather than eliminating items. Find sneaky ways to incorporate veggies into your meals – aren’t we lucky that Christmas colors are red and GREEN? (hint, hint!)

Sweat into the Spirit: Make the most of the jolliest month of the year and get festive with your fitness. Power walks around town to look at Christmas lights 100% count as a workout. So does climbing up and down a ladder as you trim the tree, helping your children up the sledding hill, speed shopping on Christmas eve, you catch my drift. We also love the idea of starting your holiday day (Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve) with a good workout to wake you up and get you ready to celebrate. Healthy Hostess: Whether you’re hosting the soiree or enjoying as a guest, everyone will appreciate a healthy option on the celebratory spread. A few favorites are these Apple Slices with Goat Cheese and Balsamic Dressing and Caprese Bites.

Treat Yo’ Self: Remember that the holidays arrive but once a year. Allow yourself to enjoy all of the treats and trimmings in moderation that come along with it. One of the best ways to support our mental health is to surround ourselves with our loved ones, and what better time than now to do just that.

The Gift of Good Health: When creating your holiday shopping list, remember that the gift of health and wellness never goes out of style! To top it off, when people plan to work out with a friend they are far more likely to stick to their goal. (Double bonus for both you and your gal pal!) Dress the Part: Since we’re gifting, it’s worth rewarding all of your hard work and motivating you to keep going with some new gear. Don’t let this cold weather get you down and keep you inside, grab a new puffer coat for to and from or an extra layer to wear for your warm up.

Speaking of dressing the part, The Barre Code Metro Detroit co-owners Lindsay and Janelle are lululemon ambassadors, and we are all loving our new store at the Somerset Collection. I recently got to spend some time with the in-store team trying out some of the latest pieces from the winter collection and picking a new Barre Code-ready look. 

I especially had a great experience doing some pants shopping. You can actually shop for pants by the way you want to feel in them (hugged, supported, naked, etc.) and I love these High Times pants. They’re super high-waisted (like above my belly button) and they are so supportive. I wanted to feel hugged and this is a style I’d buy in every single color (if that was possible) because I feel awesome when I wear them. I also went with my go-to Power Y Tank because I love the built-in bra (these also come in a ton of colors) and it keeps me feeling supported during those Barre Code cardio bursts!

For my warm up jacket, I love the Fresh Tracks 1/2 zip. It’s not too heavy, so it works under a jacket for to and from but also works to wear during warm up (which I like to do).
