10 Things I Want To Do in 2020

I originally intended on setting resolutions this year, which I did not do last year, but hurting my back over the holidays really got me thinking about what I wanted to do this year. Thankfully it wasn’t a serious injury, but I was very much laid up and unable to do anything for a week (and I’m still sore and being treated for it). Having all of that idle time got me very seriously thinking of the year ahead that I hope to have.

I really started setting some 2020 goals and giving thought and time to my perspective for the new year. I put down smaller goals for the month in my planner and wanted to share with you my “bigger goals” that led to being 10 things I want to do in 2020: 

My 2020 Goals

Work My Set Office Hours // I’m SO bad at this. I actually suck at it. I feel that because I can work anytime, anywhere that I should and I often do. While this may make me an incredibly responsive marketing person, what it also makes me is a very badly distracted mother, wife and friend. I really want to do a better job of this. Usually I’m responding to emails in the evening where it would make zero difference if I waited till the next morning. I know I can do better and I know that doing so would help me feel more of a work/life balance, so this is a huge priority for me.

Go Somewhere New // I’ve said this every year for the last 3 and we’ve gone somewhere new every single year, which has been great. Fortunately, I’ve already got this one figured out but I kept it on the list because we haven’t done it yet so I can’t quite check it off! 

Rebrand the Blog // I think I’ve been trying to do this for 2 years but THIS is the year! The wheels are already in motion for this to happen, but I need to follow through and execute on my new vision for the site. This version of the HSS feed no longer really reflects who I am and what I want to write about, and it hasn’t for some time. But new sites and rebrands cost money and time, both of which I’m shifting priorities on this year to make it happen!

Try a New Hobby // I said this one last year, as well, but I didn’t do it. This year I’m adding specifics to these “to dos” so that maybe I stick to them a little bit better. I would like to try embroidery/cross stitch/needlepoint (whichever!) and hand-lettering. I ordered a needlepoint kit from Etsy with a Valentine’s Day theme, so I’m going to start that when it arrives. I also already have a lettering book that I never started but have all the supplies for. Could it get much easier than that?

Disconnect More Often // Another thing I’m so bad at and want to change. This isn’t just the “work during work hours” thing, but rather it’s just putting my phone away and enjoying the moment. Clint and I established a new rule that we are putting our phones away when we get home from work/school/activities and not checking them again till we go to bed. We’re starting there. We have a charging dock in the cabinet in our room, so they’re out of sight and hopefully out of mind!

Read More Often // Okay, this really should be “Read AT ALL” but I tried to be forgiving of myself for this one. I don’t think I read a full book last year at all. Not one. So this year my goal is to read 6, giving me 2 months to read each one. I’m a super fast reader, I just need a little motivation and time to do it. I’m also hoping that the “disconnect” item on this list leads me back to reading! 

Grow My Marketing Business // I would love to grow our business by at least 2 clients in this calendar year. There are a lot of steps in this process including finishing our website, being more engaged on Instagram and me getting my butt out of the office and in front of prospective clients. 

Shop Less, Use More // I did a closet clean out over the holidays and was truly amazed with the amount of things I’ve worn once or not at all but “had to have.” This has made me more conscious about my perspective on what I “need” and what I “want.” I’m going to try and use what I have, shopping less and adding less where I don’t need it. Along with saving money and lots of other benefits, I hope this may make for more interesting blog content. Who needs a new outfit for every post? You know what, I really don’t!

Go on More Dates with Clint // Another thing we’ve been wanting to do for a while is make date night a more regular thing. I think date days or lunch dates would also be great, but either way, Clint and I have a goal of spending a little more kid-free time together and I think it will be good for us and also pretty fun to make this one happen!

Dress for the Day I Want to Have // I love this philosophy and I really want to LIVE it and share it through my actions. My year long yoga pants rut is going to come to an end this week and I plan on making good use out of all those unworn items in my closet. I certainly don’t plan on never wearing workout clothes for a full day ever again, but I’d prefer for those days to be fewer than they are now. I’ll take baby steps and maybe share the good  outfits here and on Instagram or LikeToKnow.It. Who’s with me on this one?

    I love this list! I don’t really make goals per se but I do set some themes that I try to focus on throughout the year. One is listening to my body and resting when I need to rest – I push myself hard at home and at work and I need to take better care of myself. Two is making the first move – I often don’t reach out to people because I feel like they might be too busy or might not care to hear from me. I’ve decided to not wait this year! Third is to try a new fitness activity each month. Finally, I want to be more well rounded and have focus areas in all facets of my life.
