Trend Alert: The Statement Shirt

I hope you all had a great weekend! We are well into our annual October trip to Disney World, and we’ve got a lot of big plans over the next few days so stay tuned to Instagram and my story for little snippets here and there. I’m trying to stay off of my phone except for photos (and the occasional work E-mail!), so there will be a couple of recap posts when we get back. I’m planning to do a post on what I actually packed and the outfits I wore, and then another about my top 10 Disney tips.

On the topic of outfits, the one I’m wearing in this post did not come on the trip with me, but I will be wearing it a good amount this fall and winter. When I put on this shirt for the first time and came downstairs, Clint said “Those are the biggest sleeves I’ve ever seen.” Although I think there may have been a compliment in there somewhere (or maybe not), that’s true, they kind of are.

I’ve wanted a Caroline Constas shirt for a while, but the off-the-shoulder shirt that has been super popular for a while just wasn’t realistic for me. I have a 20 month old who insists on “up please!” constantly and pulling at any shirt just doesn’t work when that’s the case. So anyway, I saw this shirt at Neiman Marcus during the Barre Code event I co-hosted last month and it immediately caught my eye. I don’t have a lot of button down shirts and I liked that this one was a really classic color and print but had such fun details. I love the victorian style neck and gold buttons, and those sleeve. Ah the sleeves, they’re huge but amazing

Now, I can get where you may wonder how the sleeves don’t drive me crazy (especially if the off-the-shoulder thing did), but I’ve found that they actually move out of the way pretty easily and they even flatten well when I wear them while working and typing at my computer.

I also get that Caroline Constas is a bit pricey, but here are a few other options to get the trend at a different price point:

  • If you like the idea of a blue stripe, I also love this top from Madewell (which you’ve seen me wear on Instagram already!).
  • This Banana Republic top comes in gorgeous colors and have a totally different style of statement sleeve (pleats!) that’s really cool and great to dress up or down.
  • Looking for some ruffled polka dot perfection? I have and love this BURU top too, it’s good with leather leggings, jeans or even tucked into a skirt.

Before I go, if you’re looking for velvet pants, these J Brand pants are crazy comfortable. While the shirt may not be a subtle trend, the velvet pants are!
