Suits, specifically conservative black pantsuits, were the “thing” in grad school when you were looking for a job and I’m pretty sure I only ever owned one, which I only wore on interviews. When I started my marketing job at the agency in Houston in 2009, I said a not so sad goodbye to the possibility of ever wearing a suit again. I got to, and loved to, wear jeans to work any or everyday and getting too dressed up (although I still did) was definitely grounds for people to wonder if you were interviewing elsewhere.
When By Smith sent me this cute little short suit (sold separately as a jacket and shorts), I thought “well, I would have worn suits to work if they were all like this!” I love how it is light, easy to layer and you can make it more formal or more casual with accessories and shoes. By Smith is a new-to-me brand with lots of great, feminine styles with amazing details, including my favorites: this printed coat and this blouse.
I originally heard about the brand from Stylewhile, which is an app that allows you to virtually try on clothing from stores across the web. Stylewhile also focuses on introducing new designers to a brand new, larger audience.
Other ways to wear this outfit:
- Shorts alone: Wear with a black sweater, the tights and flats – and add a pop of color with a clutch.
- Jacket alone: Pair with skinny dark jeans, booties and a basic tee, along with a little sparkle.
