Wedding Weekend Essentials

Tuesday, July 31, 2012

This weekend is the big weekend - my sister's wedding! We're so excited for the festivities to start and we started packing way ahead of time for this one. These are a few of my absolute essentials for this big weekend:
1. A comfy, stylish dress (Charlie Jade) to wear while getting ready and in transit to the gorgeous venue
2. Kai Fragrance products - a favorite of both the bride and myself.
3. Waterproof Dior mascara, for those happy tears
4. Pretty Estee Lauder compact for pre-photo makeup checks
5. Kate Spade dancing shoes, because this is going to be one awesome party!

Work Wardrobe Makeover

Monday, July 30, 2012

I'm really very excited to be back to work and not only do I really like my job, but I also like the fact that I now have an excuse to get dressed up every day (no more maternity leave days of living in lululemon yoga pants!). I've been shopping around and here are a few of the updates I'd like to make to my workwear wardrobe. I work in a pretty casual office so I'll note below a few options to dress these up a bit.
I love the knit dress with a little snakeskin Jessica Simpson shoe and some neutral Mickey Lynn jewelry and Gap bag. This Banana Republic dress could easily get dressed up with a blazer and transition to fall and winter with some tights, boots and a sweater.

The trouser style and wide belt make these Emily Hallman pants a nice light option for work. I like this with a cap sleeve Gap blouse for a casual Friday, or on any given day in a casual office. The Luxury Rebel heels and some gold BaubleBar bling round out this one.

This printed skirt from Anthro adds a little fun to workwear. This is another one that will transition well to fall with a sweater and tights or dress up with a jacket. For now I'd pair the LNA tee, conservative Nine West wedges, Gorjana earrings (also in gold) and a durable and stylish bag from Tory Burch.

Prints (DVF shown) and white jeans (DL1961) make for a casual but chic look at work. Add some Jack Rogers sandals on a Friday or some neutral heels during the week and you're good to go. I also love how Kendra Scott's statement jewelry can dress up an outfit and add a unique touch.

What is your favorite work look? Share in comments or on Facebook!

Weekend Inspiration

Friday, July 27, 2012

This pretty much sums up how I feel about this weekend! It has been a very busy week but today I am off to Dallas for a photo shoot tomorrow morning (more to come on this later!). As a bonus to my trip, I get to go out to dinner with my good friend, Merritt, and lunch with my husband's sisters.

Here are a few links I'm loving this week:
  • Have you entered the giveway for the rose gold leather cuff from Mary Nichols? Also make sure to check out her fab collection of handbags here.
  • I'm back to monogram jewelry searching. Right now my favorites are this letter ring from Shopbop and this monogram necklace from BaubleBar.
  • I've been a bit sick this week and I wish I would have found this recipe sooner! Comfort food + major carbs = remedy for anything.
  • Moda Operandi has had these incredible Master Mix trunkshows lately. The Tribal Beat mix has been my favorite so far and I'm thinking about snagging these Westward Leaning sunglasses in bright blue!
Happy Weekend!

Find of the Day

Thursday, July 26, 2012

I was obsessed with these Stuart Weitzman heels this spring and, going into fall, I'm loving this flat version. I'm in need some more shoes that are easy to slip on and off for school drop offs and to help speed up getting out of the house in the morning (I'll take every second I can get!).

Success Story + Giveaway: Mary Nichols

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

A few weeks back, I posted about a must-have bag from Houston designer Mary Nichols and I'm excited to have recently had the opportunity to interview her about her gorgeous handbag collection and what we can expect to see next from her amazing talent. Make sure you read through to the end of the interview...there's a little surprise!

What inspires the handbags that you create?
I am inspired by everyday life. I think about what is missing from my wardrobe and go from there.  I then look to artists or places I travelled to get inspiration for colors and design details.

My favorite handbag in your collection right now is the Bleecker bag, because I love carrying a bag that fits everything I need to get through the day. What is your current favorite? Is there one that you consider your everyday essential?
The Bleecker Bag is my best seller.  It is a fantastic everyday bag (it will hold a laptop), but is also a great transition to evening bag because it's not a huge tote.  My current favorite is the Porter Tote in Sand Canvas.  I recently got married and have my new initials monogrammed in red on it.  It's a great lightweight summer everyday bag.

When you’re creating a piece what do you hope the style brings to your customers?
I am hoping to bring functionality to customers, as well as a hard to find classic, statement pieces.

What is your perfect bag for: Work? Date night? Chic Weekend?
The Patton Tote is great for work, it's dressy, but still glamorously understated.  My go to for date night is the Manhattan Clutch in Black Patent, and the canvas Porter Tote for weekend.

What can we expect to see next from you?
I am expanding into more one of a kind exotic handbags.  A few are available online, but a customer can design a custom one by making an appointment.  The unlimited options and colors are really fun to work with.

What brings happiness, success and style into your life?
I am very aware that there are endless accessory options for customers.  I get so excited and flattered when someone chooses something I have created - it is so fulfilling.  I find great happiness searching for new ideas for designs.

GIVEAWAY!

I'm so excited that Mary has so kindly offered to giveaway one of the great pieces of jewelry that she carries. This rose gold leather cuff is a pretty pink metallic leather and gold hardware. It is valued at $50 and you can enter below!

The giveaway closes at midnight on July 31 and the winner will be announced on August 1.

This Just In

Monday, July 23, 2012

Admittedly, I cleaned out my closet a bit too much when I was pregnant, thinking I would never wear certain things again (and now I really miss a few of those items). With so many trips and events coming up, I've been restocking and getting some replacements (and upgrades) for things I carelessly discarded. Here are a few things that have been recent closet additions:

Bop Basics Jumpsuit  -  David Peck Collection Romper  -  Hunter Dixon Blouse
DVF Lace Dress (also here)  -  J. Crew Anchor Tank (no longer available, but cute alternate)
J.Crew Chambray Shirt  -  J.Crew Panama Hat
Bangles from Kuhl-Linscomb  -  ELMELM Earrings  -  Korcula Earrings

Color Crush: Navy Lady

I really do wear a lot of black, but I love navy as a little bit of a change for my go-to neutral. Pairing navy with brights is so easy, as is going for a buttoned up look for work or a nautical look for a lake weekend. What are your favorite neutrals?

Here are some of my current navy favorites:
1. J.Crew Sailboat Bikini  2. Banana Republic Aiden Bag  3. Parker Wrap Dress
4. Kate Spade Charm Slingback  5. West Elm Ceramic Vase  6. Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Eyeliner
7. Jack Rogers Palm Beach Navajos  8. Tory Burch Sunglasses
9. Gorjana Wrap Bracelet 10. Bop Basics Jumpsuit

Weekend Inspiration

This photo has been floating around the blogs and Pinterest lately and, this week, it certainly describes how I'm feeling heading into the weekend! I'm learning to create balance between work, family, blog and life (essentially the "trying to have it all" balance) - all of which is crazy at the moment. So this weekend is for catching up on all of the above before the crazy starts again next week! There's a fun giveaway coming up next week, as well as new outfit posts and a recipe, so stay tuned. Happy weekend everyone!

Sunday Brunch: Sour Cream & Peach Pancakes

Thursday, July 19, 2012

As you all know, I love Sunday brunch! One of my favorite things to do is try new recipes at home on Sundays with my husband and my son. This past weekend, we went back to an old favorite but changed it up a bit. This recipe is from Ina Garten and is supposed to be made with bananas. However, peaches are in season and my mother-in-law just brought us a fresh bunch of them (with which I also made homemade baby food for the little guy). I'm terrible and don't eat a ton of fruit, but my husband is our in-house expert and said these were great with the peaches.

The original recipe is below, along with our modification:
Ingredients
            •            1 1/2 cups flour
            •            3 tablespoons sugar
            •            2 teaspoons baking powder
            •            1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
            •            1/2 cup sour cream
            •            3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon milk
            •            2 extra-large eggs
            •            1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
            •            1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
            •            Unsalted butter
            •            2 ripe bananas, diced, plus extra for serving (we used about 3 peaches, peeled and sliced)
            •            Pure maple syrup

Directions
Sift together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sour cream, milk, eggs, vanilla, and lemon zest. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ones, mixing only until combined.

Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat until it bubbles. Ladle the pancake batter into the pan to make 3 or 4 pancakes. Distribute a rounded tablespoon of bananas on each pancake. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until bubbles appear on top and the underside is nicely browned. Flip the pancakes and then cook for another minute until browned. Wipe out the pan with a paper towel, add more butter to the pan, and continue cooking pancakes until all the batter is used. Serve with sliced bananas, butter and maple syrup.

Pinspiration: At Home Details

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Last week, I made a relatively long checklist of everything I wanted to do and/or finish around the house, as far as decorating. A lot of it centers around the little details (such as coffee table books, picture frames, pillows, flowers, etc.). This is one of those times where Pinterest (follow my boards here!) surely comes in handy. I'm finding tons of photos of ways to display items, and some colors to add to really make things pop. These are some of my favorites and what's inspiring my decorating at the moment.

What decorating projects are your favorites? Share some ideas with me - I'd love to hear them!

Find of the Day

My Rachel Pally dresses are certainly among some of my favorites. They're all so soft, flattering and versatile. I don't have a Rachel Pally jumpsuit, but if I did, I would hands down want this one. I could wear it to my business casual office or even out on errands, to the zoo or museum with my son on the weekends. Shop it here.

To Do List

Monday, July 16, 2012

I LOVE lists, I make lists all the time for work, shopping, errands, really anything I possibly can. I love crossing things off of all of the aforementioned lists and I really love having pretty paper to write my lists on. Enter Sugar Paper, Los Angeles. My sister got her gorgeous wedding invitations done at Sugar Paper and, when asking me to be her maid of honor, gave me a sweet card and this absolutely perfect to do list pad. Sadly my pages are dwindling so I've gone back to check out the options at Sugar Paper to restock. I love their bright notes pads, market pads and this great, sectioned market pad for my grocery list.

It has been a rainy, dreary week here in Houston and I actually am starting to miss the sun and heat. Other than the weather, it has been a pretty spectacular week. Got some flights booked for some trips and found out about a few fun things to look forward to (including some great things for the blog that I look forward to sharing with you all!). I'm excited to head out for a lake weekend to celebrate a friend's birthday and get a little sun and relaxation. What are you all up to this weekend?

Sheridan French Vivienne Tunic
Pim + Larkin Chambray Trim Tunic

Marc by Marc Jacobs  Stripe Tunic
DVF Zalia Cover Up

Nili Lotan Beach Maxi Dress

I've been shopping around for some cute poolside cover-ups. I need something that is pretty, comfortable to sit down in and provides just the right amount of coverage without feeling like a muumuu (this is key!). Not to mention, a lot of these great cover-ups are starting to go on sale, so you can get them at a great deal as we head into late summer.

Easy BBQ Chicken Pizza

In our attempt to make quick, easy, healthy (sort of) dinners, the latest weekly tradition at our house is pizza night. To keep things healthier, we try to come up with combinations where we can add veggies and minimize the cheese. This week's pizza was BBQ chicken, made up and cooked by my husband (photographed by me), who really is a great cook.

Ingredients:

  • Prepared pizza crust (we use Boboli thin crust)
  • BBQ Sauce (our favorite is Rudy's)
  • 1 whole boneless, skinless chicken breast, dice
  • 1/4 red onion, sliced thinly
  • 2 plum tomatoes, diced
  • 1/2 ball fresh mozzerella cheese
  • Chopped cilantro, for garnish

Directions:

  • Heat the oven according to package directions of crust
  • Brown the chicken in a pan on the stove, adding a couple of tablespoons of BBQ sauce for the last minute or two
  • Spread a light coating of BBQ sauce on the crust
  • Cover crust with chicken, followed by tomatoes, onions and mozzerella
  • Cook according to crust package directions (ours was 8-10 minutes and we typically cook 10 minutes)
  • After taking out of the oven, sprinkle on cilantro and serve

Hunter Dixon Trunk Show

Tuesday, July 10, 2012

My outfit
Some of the pretty colors and prints
Snacks from Petite Sweets and Central Market
This past weekend I hosted a trunk show for Hunter Dixon with some friends here in Houston. I love the prints and brights that fill their spring collection. I snagged this bright coral top (which I paired with white Banana Republic shorts, Kendra Scott earrings and Jimmy Choo wedges for the show), which is so lightweight and bright that it'll be perfect through the end of summer and into early fall here in Houston. I'm really hoping to host a show for fall, as I can only expect that the amazing ladies at Hunter Dixon will continue to impress with flattering styles and gorgeous colored pieces.

For snacks at the show, I picked up macarons from Petite Sweets and my favorite alfajores cookies and chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies from Central Market.

What a weird week, right? The mid-week holiday sure made this week feel like two Mondays and two Fridays, so I'm a little thrown off, and ready for a relaxing weekend. I'm looking forward to hosting some fabulous Houston ladies at my house tomorrow afternoon for a trunk show for Hunter Dixon (photos to come!) and heading out to brunch with my husband and son on Sunday. What are you up to this weekend?

Here are some links I'm loving this week:

  • I'm loving the pre-fall E-mails making their way to my inbox lately. I especially love the pre-fall shoe collection from Loeffler Randall and the smart-chic collection by Jenni Kayne.
  • I posted yesterday about my s'mores cookies for the Fourth of July. Another recipe that was a close second on the must-make list was this one (found via Pinterest).
  • Check out this amazing giveaway on the blog of fellow Houston blogger, Katy of Sugarlaws. How great would it be to win a $1500 gift card to La-Z-Boy to update your home? I'm so in.
  • Be sure to connect with me on Instagram, Facebook, Bloglovin, Pinterest and Twitter for updates that I don't post here on the blog!

S'mores Cookies

Thursday, July 5, 2012

Our little family on the 4th
We had a very low-key 4th of July celebration this year. Just some pool time with the little guy and some good friends - and LOTS of really good food. The July issue of Martha Stewart Living magazine was taunting me with the s'more goodness on the cover. Then in one of their "Cookie of the Day" E-mails (which I highly recommend signing up for!) was this delightful recipe. This became my contribution to our celebration yesterday. They were super easy and quick to make and turned out to be amazing! Needless to say, they were the perfect summer cookie and a huge hit. I'll surely be making these again and I hope you will too!

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday!
