Weekend Inspiration

Friday, June 29, 2012

How fabulous is this sketch by my friend Monica from the blog Classy & Fabulous? She's a fantastic artist and I was so excited to receive this sketch she did of me (in a Thakoon dress I'd die to own!). I'll be hanging the original in a frame on my "inspiration wall" in my closet with a couple of other fashion pieces I bought awhile back on Etsy. This is actually perfect timing, as the goal of my weekend, lame as it may be, is to get my closet cleaned out and reorganized. I hope to have before and after photos in the near future, but this may be more than just a one weekend project.

Here are a few links I'm loving this week:
  • Check out Monica's Etsy shop here to check out some of the other pretty artwork she does (thank you again M!)
  • I'm planning to make this summery, fresh pasta recipe from this week's Tuesday Tastings on CamilleStyles.com this weekend.
  • I shared my favorites from Kendra Scott Jewelry this week. Well I spoke too soon because the next day, her pre-fall collection came out. I'm loving the Padma necklace and Dalton earring in Cool.
  • Stripes are going to be my pattern of choice for the 4th next week. I'm thinking of ordering this dress, or maybe this style steal, for our cookout and fireworks watching.
Happy weekend!

This Brahmin Boutique Anytime Tote is just the perfect, summery tote for work or a little weekend (or weekday) shopping! It comes in a few other colors, but for me the yellow is fun neutral to stand out in these hazy summer days.

Check out this and all of the new Spring/Summer 2012 Brahmin bags here.

The Love List

Images c/o Hunter Dixon
I'm very seriously craving a summer vacation and when that happens, my love for the Sunshine State always is strong in my mind. That's why I'm thrilled that Jennifer Dixon (of Hunter Dixon) shared with me her love list for an upcoming trip to Miami. I'm loving the gold, bright colors and the fact that two of my fave Miami spots are on this list.

Are you off to anywhere this summer? What's on your vacation love list?

Weekend Recap

Top row: Reading on the elliptical / My ShopTalk blog post from Friday
Middle: Heading to the baby shower / The menu at Roots
Bottom: Delish mini cupcakes at the Curry Crawl
I hope you all had a great weekend! It is so nice to start the week after spending a weekend catching up with friends from out of town, celebrating and, of course, lots of good food. On Friday I had dinner with my good friend Merritt (from The Style Scribe) at the new restaurant, Roots, here in Houston. The farm-to-table concept had lots of great, fresh food and our faves were the heirloom tomato pizza and a chevre cheese, mushroom and tomato salad - yum! On Saturday, I had a baby shower for another friend whose son will be just a few months older than mine (outfit post on this one coming this week!), then we to a cookout with our little one.

I was lucky enough to win tickets to Houston's first ever Curry Crawl from Houston Tidbits and we headed out to Straits at CityCentre for the event on Sunday afternoon (with the little man in tow - thank goodness he is so well behaved and sweet that he allows us to have a life!). We sampled bites from some of Houston's best chefs, and my favorite was a curried BBQ pork from Blu Restaurant, somewhere we had never heard of but will be visiting in the near future.

Now I'm off to a busy and hopefully very productive week! What did you all do this weekend?

Summer in the City: The Uniform

Friday, June 22, 2012

I'm thrilled to tell you that today I am guest posting on Shopbop's blog, ShopTalk, about my summer uniform.

My summer in the hot city will be filled with casual days spent at the park or the pool followed by light dinners with friends out on the patio – either at home or one of our favorite restaurants.  And during this crazy summer on-the-go, I’ll practically be living in my summer uniform: a bright maxi skirt with light, comfortable tops. I love this combination because it is so versatile, light and can go from day to night – you can lunch at the park in a light solid tank, flat sandals and a hat, then just switch up the top to add some color, throw on some wedges and an armful of bracelets and you’re set for a dinner out.

I love this bright silk skirt from 10 Crosby by Derek Lam paired with my favorite James Perse tank, Loeffler Randall flats, Maison Scotch hat and a nice big Tory Burch bag for daytime. To change it up for the evening, this Tibi striped top with natural and gold accessories from Tory Burch, Bop Basics and Dolce Vita make the perfect casual dinner outfit.

Which pieces are you sporting as your summer uniform?

Weekend Inspiration

Another summer weekend. This cool photo from Pinterest makes me think of vacation. I'm also thinking of keeping it around when I'm in need of some daydreaming this fall/winter. We actually have a relaxing weekend ahead of us: dinner with friends, shopping for some decorative items for the house and catching up on some sleep (hopefully!). What are you guys up to this weekend?

Links I'm loving this week:
  • Could BaubleBar really get any better? Apparently the answer is yes, because the latest designer pop-up, Noble House Designs, opened this week. Get your gorgeous tribal essentials here.
  • I'm excited for 11:00 Central time today, because that is when Houston designer David Peck's collection will be on Gilt
  • Can't wait to try Roots Bistro here in Houston tonight with my good friend, Merritt (The Style Scribe). Expect a full recap of the delish details next week.
  • Check out Shopbop's collaboration with Alternative, Olivia Wilde and Barbara Burchfield of a limited-edition message bag benefiting The Academy for Peace and Justice in Haiti.
Happy Weekend!

Things I Love: At Home

Thursday, June 21, 2012

My Indian angel from Singapore

Part of our fleur de lis collection

My Prada Marfa canvas

Monogrammed pillow on our bed.

I've been doing a lot of pinning lately (see my At Home board here) in an attempt to find inspiration to finish the details of our house. We've got artwork to find and hang, pillows and towels to buy and coffee table books and lots of little accessories I'm convinced that we're missing. It seems like I constantly am looking for things to change so I wanted to take a step back and share a few of the details of our house that I love.

What are your favorite pieces at your house?

Save vs. Splurge: Glitter Loafers

These fabulous Prada glitter loafers made their way to my inbox this week (thank you Saks Fifth Avenue), and subsequently right to my wish list. They're a bit pricey, so I found a great alternative from Nine West. I like to think of the Prada version as an investment, but if I went with the Nine West pair, that means I could probably buy a second pair of shoes nearly guilt-free. Decisions, decisions...

Which pair do you like better?

This lightweight gingham shirt from Old Navy is a summer wardrobe essential. I love it with white shorts (like this seriously on sale pair) and wedges and a fun necklace (like this one from Spike the Punch!)

Summer Beauty Buys

Some of my favorite products
Recently, I decided to revamp my beauty routine for summer. My skin has been incredibly sensitive since being pregnant, so I've switched to some new products to keep my skin in good shape. I also want to try and keep my makeup routine simple and light. To do this I've found it best to combine drugstore and department store brands, each has its own benefits and the combination makes it a little easier on the wallet! This is what has been working for me:

Cleansing:
I'm keeping things very simple here, so I use Cetaphil both day and night. At night I use it with my trusty Clarisonic for exfoliation.

Treatment & Moisturizing:
During the day I'm using CeraVe moisturizer with 30 SPF under my makeup. In the evening, I use Olay Regenerist Night Cream. For eye cream, I've started using Neocutis Lumiere Bio-Restorative Eye Cream. Twice a week, I use Kate Somerville Clinic To Go Resurfacing Peel Pads for a little extra treatment!

Makeup basics:
I love my Rae Cosmetics primer, it has a little SPF and is oil-free - a great base to start with. A few of my other favorite products are: NARS Orgasm Blush, Diorshow Mascara, Cle de Peau Concealer (the best!), Chanel Bronzer, Chanel Waterproof Liner (in Cassis) and Tom Ford Lip Color (in Pink Dusk).

What I still need:
As always, there are a few things I'd love to add to my beauty arsenal. Right now I would especially love some Makeup For Ever faux eyelashes, a Kate Somerville Golden Glow Kit, and Bobbi Brown Beach Eau de Parfum.

What are your summer beauty essentials? Share with me in comments!

Blueprints

Monday, June 18, 2012

I'm finding myself liking a lot of pretty, watery-colored blue/gray/greenish prints lately. The coolness of the color is a nice contrast to these much too hot summer days. I like all of these prints from work to weekend with gold jewelry, neutral accessories and sunglasses.

Top: ASOS  -  Anthropologie

Must-Have Bag

The latest addition to my must-have list of handbags is this sweet little satin clutch by Houston designer, Mary Nichols. I love the Pear color for summer - and there are several other options in the online store. In the other styles, I'm a huge fan of both the Bleecker Bag and the Porter Tote - because I certainly can't get enough of big bags that I can carry my life around in!

Happy Friday, I hope you all have had a fabulous week! I've had a crazy one myself, going back to work after maternity leave, sending my little guy to his first school and just getting into a whole new routine - all very exciting and very tiring! I'm wishing I could be at a beach under one of these lovely yellow umbrellas with some sun and a cocktail to relax and rest up for another week.

Here are some of my favorite links from this week:

  • Did you see my first ever outfit post? I'd love to know what you think and if you want to see more!
  • In Houston and looking to add some style to your weekend? Stop by Tootsies through tomorrow and check out what's new from Houston designer, David Peck, at his trunk show.
  • I'm excited to now be a contributor at fashion blogazine, Nubry. Check out my first article here.
  • What are your plans for Father's Day? We've got a big Sunday of food and family planned, and I'm thinking of making this eggs benedict casserole for a big brunch to kick things off.
  • Shopbop's Summer Sale is on and there are lots of new items at 70% off on the site. Shop it
Have a wonderful weekend!

Find of the Day

Another super bright find of the day! Over the weekend, I saw someone wearing a bright yellow watch similar to this Nixon watch from Yoox.com. I think it'll look awesome with a bright white outfit and a great summer tan!

What I Wore: First Day Back to Work

This week I officially returned to work from maternity leave. It has been great to get back and see all of my colleagues - and have to get dressed every day! Luckily I work in a very casual office and we can dress up, dress down or anywhere in between depending on what's on the meeting schedule.

Here's what I wore on my first day back:
{skirt: Express - old - similar here and here}  {Tank: Gap}  {Shoes: Alexander Wang - other color here
{Jewelry: Michele watch, Tiffany bracelet, David Yurman ring, custom earrings and wedding bands}

On My Wish List

Anthropologie Anchor Clutch  -  Club Monaco Maxi Skirt  -  Hunter Dixon Top and Shorts

Current Favorites from: BaubleBar

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

BaubleBar is knocking it out of the park lately (really, always)! I love the awesome statement necklaces, designer pop-up shops and fun pieces that the site has. Everything is also so well-priced that it is easy to stock up on new summer gems nearly guilt-free.

Here are the five pieces on my favorites list at the moment:

Pretty in Pink

You know what I don't have? Pink shorts. And obviously, I need pink shorts. Lucky for me, there are quite a few options out there. I'm thinking about wearing them with gold sandals or wedges (like these) and a white tee (current favorite here), maybe throwing on a blazer for work. Which pair do you like best?

L to R:
Alice + Olivia  -  Free People  -  Pink Martini (style steal!)  -  Gap  -  Raoul

Weekend Brunch

Monday, June 11, 2012

Sunday is quite possibly my favorite day of the week. I love spending lazy Sunday mornings with my husband and son, making a big breakfast and usually watching HGTV and finding big ideas for our house. This weekend I tried this recipe for breakfast enchiladas that I found on Pinterest, along with Ina Garten's peach bellinis. On the enchiladas, I made a couple of changes, basically to add a little more kick: 1. I used Guy Fieri's Tequila Lime Chicken Sausage instead of ham and 2. I added Chipotle Tabasco to the eggs. My husband also makes the most delish homemade salsa from a recipe his mom gave us. Even though it is just Monday, I already can't wait till next Sunday with my boys!

Father's Day Gift Guide

Father's Day is even more special at our house this year, as we celebrate my husband's very first Father's Day. I'm so lucky to have such a wonderful father myself and for my husband to be such an amazing dad to our little guy.

Here are a few fun gift ideas for Dad:

I am loving these summer brights and with temps here in Houston creeping up on 100 degrees, the brighter the better. I am co-hosting a baby shower for a very dear friend this weekend and then we may also go to a crawfish boil (my first one ever). Instagram (ninarand) photos will definitely be posted of this experience. What are you all up to this weekend?

Here's what is inspiring me this weekend:
  • Thanks to my dear friend Lauren for her guest post this week. Check out her blog, The Early Riser, here.
  • I'm loving the insider Summer favorites at Shopbop right now. Check them out.
  • Have you signed up to get daily Emails of The HSS Feed posts? You can do so in the left sidebar under "Subscribe." There are some great things coming up and they'll be announced via Email first so make sure you're on the list!
  • Lemony Cream Butter Cake, via Pinterest. Umm yes, please. Ruining my diet with this one this weekend.
  • How awesome is this Hey, Sailor! color collection by MAC? The packaging is nautically excellent and the products look fabulous.
  • Who doesn't love the Mints? StyleMint, HomeMint, ShoeMint, BeautyMint....well now there is IntiMint, with loungewear, sleepwear and lingerie. The site hasn't launched yet but you can sign up here for early access to the site and be sure to refer your friends to start earning rewards!

How much fun is this fabulous orange bag by Rebecca Minkoff? I've long been a fan of the Mini MAC bag and the bright orange is perfect for summer. I love it to add a splash of color to a little white dress or basic summer shorts. It also comes in neon pink and you really couldn't go wrong either way.

New for the Night Launch Party

On Tuesday night I was invited to attend the launch party for New for the Night. New for the Night rents out designer dresses for three or more days at a fraction of the retail price. The launch party was at Saint Genevieve at West Ave and was well attended by lots of stylish Houston ladies. As one of the Houston bloggers invited, I was treated to a rental dress from New for the Night. I chose this fun, fringed number by Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna and loved the great color and movement of the dress (and I'm working on taking better photos of my outfits and accessories!).

Check out New for the Night's website here and, if you're in Houston, make an appointment to check out their fabulous options for your next event.

Guest Post: Dressing the Part

My friend Lauren writes the blog, The Early Riser, where she talks about navigating life as a young professional and newlywed - often with great recipes involved! I love her writing style, wit and sarcastic sense of humor, and I asked her to share a guest post with The HSS Feed and I'm excited that she agreed.

We are in the midst of wedding season. And my husband and I have been to four weddings within five weeks. Four blushing brides in four beautiful gowns, four proud grooms ogling their newly minted wife, four first kisses, first dances, cake cuttings, and drunken attendants. Despite the wedding formula though - the agenda that every pair of newlyweds has to check off before Donna Summer belts out 'Last Dance’ - remarkably, each wedding was quite different.

There were different venues, appetizers and signature cocktails; different crowds and different dance floor cultures; different layers of cake and different midnight snacks; and a springtime array of different, carefully selected dresses.

Every wedding attendee knows, around the time that the groom kisses his bride, and Mr. and Mrs. is-that-really-her-new-name walk up the aisle, you are released from a state of captive bridal attention, and informally granted permission to start scoping out the crowd. Who’s who, who’s gained weight, who’s wearing what, and please God no, who’s wearing the same dress as me. (Bitch.)

I knew that at some point all eyes would pass over me during these four weddings, so figuring out what to wear was a challenge.

Well, the first wedding was easy. As a bridesmaid, the work was done for me. I wore a long navy Amsale dress. Classic. The next three were more difficult. I picked a knee length ultramarine Trina Turk dress for the second wedding, a crimson Sue Wong for the third, and a jet-black, form fitting, Yoana Baraschi to the fourth. I’ve sported ruffles, asymmetry and cleavage. I was squeezed in and given ample room to breath.  But despite having rationalized what did and didn’t work, I still feel like I could have done better – that I wasn’t completely pleased when the pictures popped up on Facebook the next day.

So in retrospect, I’ve put together some style tips for women on the wedding circuit.
  • If you end up getting your period the night before the wedding, just resort to wearing a mumu. Basically, you won’t look good in any of your dresses.
  • If you aren’t familiar with movement in your floor length dress, don’t drink and dance. You’ll end up on the ground, in the middle of a slow-moving dance floor, with all eyes of old folks on you.
  • Unless you are really strapped in, strapless dresses honestly aren’t a good idea. You’ll be yanking it up like a pre-teen with no social grace all night.
  • There is a cleavage cut-off point. A little bit is fine, but leave the red carpet cleavage for the celebs. Even though you’ve been working on your body, there’s only so much of it that people are comfortable looking at.
  • Wear shoes that you can dance in – taking them off is so 1990.
  • Most likely, your body has changed over the years. Which means even though your favorite dress from college might zip up, it doesn’t necessarily fit right.
  • Ultimately it is about the bride.  So when you catch yourself obsessing about you and your look for the night, have your date slap you back into focus. Suck up your dance floor downfall, constant dress maneuvering, cleavage mishap, and menstrual bloat, and do your part to make sure the bride is smiling all night long.

Lo.
