Success Story is one of my favorite features. I love getting to ask questions of wonderfully successful people who have worked hard and done so in an admirably stylish way.
I’m thrilled to have had the chance to interview Esther Freedman, founder of the adorable children’s clothing line, cuteheads. I’ve been anxiously awaiting the launch of cuteheads since I found out about Esther’s new venture. She is certainly someone to admire for her creativity and business sense, but also the incredible sense of balance she has in her life. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next (especially the boys items from cuteheads)!
HSS: I know you have a background in marketing, so what inspired you to start a children’s clothing line and how did you come up with such an adorable concept?
EF: I’ve always known I wanted to work for myself, and knew I had to wait for the right idea to come along to go for it. In our house, we have many names for our dog; one of them is “cutehead.” One day it hit me that it was a cute name for a business, and from the name, a concept grew to have a family of animals, who all have cute heads and their own unique personalities. After developing the business plan, it became clear that we really had an idea for a brand.
HSS: You made a pretty huge career change (bravo!) to start cuteheads. What advice do you have for people who are considering starting their own businesses?
EF: The best advice I can give is, before you go out on your own, develop the skills it takes to self motivate. You will work harder than you ever thought you would, and you’ll be faced with challenges you didn’t know you could overcome, but you can, and you have to be able to talk yourself out of giving up. If you have the ability to see something through to completion, you will be well on your way.
I’d also add that having a supportive network in place is essential not only to success, but to your well being in the early days. I know when I start having full-on conversations with my dog that it’s time to call a friend for a coffee break.
HSS: Can you give us a hint as to what is coming next for cuteheads?
EF: Anything for you! I believe we’ll be doing a few pieces for boys next, followed by holiday onesies for babies. We should be in production on those items very soon.
HSS: What are your favorite pieces in the cuteheads line right now?
EF: Originally, I loved the Forget Me Not dress in all the color combos. I still do, but the Rawr Tee has crept up on me. I love the bright pink paired with our precocious little Kingston the Lion. Sweet & strong at the same time, like little girls should be.
HSS: What brings happiness, success and style into your life?
EF: This may sound a bit trite, but no matter what happens with cuteheads, I am happy to have a great family and an incredible husband who supports me and wants me to succeed. As for success, I define it by the journey, not the outcome, so as far as I’m concerned, if you’re trying, then you’re succeeding.
