Blog We Love: Dessert Darling

Dessert Darling is a fun blog for those of you with a sweet tooth! Jenny Alden is based in LA and doesn't sugarcoat the truth when it comes to her take on desserts.  She will give you her honest opinion about the desserts she tries by a "5 Cherry" rating system.  The website is full of different desserts that will make you want to get in the kitchen and bake (or go to the places she recommends). She is also an advocate for awareness.  On the blog there is information about being gluten free, vegan, healthy options, and she gives advice on her "Thinning Thursdays" posts. It's a great blog to follow on twitter for a sweet little pick-me-up!

All Braided Up

I am all about the health of my hair! When I am talking to clients about how to keep their hair healthy I tell them that one of the best ways is to not wash it every day. The question I get most often is “how do I style it if I don’t wash it?” I love the boho chic look of the braid. Doing a simple braid at the fringe of your hair, or braiding all of it back is a quick and simple style, but is still very fashionable. The braid is all over LA right now! There is even a “Braid Bar” at one of my favorite places, Nine Zero One Salon in West Hollywood.

We all know Etsy has lots of great, unique finds and Lettergirl is one of our new favorites! I'm excited to order a new return address stamp for my new house and Lettergirl designs these handwritten stamps in several different styles. They look nothing like the standard return address stamp - and we love it!

Summer Friday

Friday, June 17, 2011

Before you head out for some fun in the sun this weekend,
check out our picks for this Summer Friday:

Birthday Beer

The cake I made for my boyfriend's birthday!

First..... I made the chocolate cake batter and separated it into 4 six inch round cake pans. Once they cooled down completely, I stacked them with buttercream frosting between each layer. To make sure they didn't topple over I put in 4 dowels (you can buy them at Michael's).

The icing is super easy..... the "beer" is yellow food coloring with a little brown food coloring added. The foam is just the white butter cream that I piped on to give the look of it spilling over the rim.

In order to make the illusion of the beer pouring out of the can I took a couple of dowels and wrapped fondant around them and shaped them. To get that color I also used yellow and brown food coloring. (I like using the "Duff Fondant"). Once the fondant has hardened you can stick it into the middle of the cake. Then all you have to do is attach the empty beer can on the top.  I recommend using a can and not a bottle because it is lighter AND it can be angled to give the "pouring" look.

For the handle I simply shaped it with fondant and let it harden.  I stuck it in the cake with toothpicks..... a little advice though..... don't make it too thick (like I did) because it is heavy and makes it more difficult to stay in place.

So drink a beer.... and make a cake!
